Members give judge Rose Atkinson the hardest of tasks !

The creative juices flowed at NRPS this week as local photographer, and something of an expert in the genres, Rose Atkinson, returned to judge our efforts in the March Digital image Competition, “ICM and Multiple Images”. Many of us have attended Rose’s informative walks in Wells following her presentation at the club about a year ago, and the evidence of all we had learned, and continue to experiment with as a result of the tuition, was there for all to see. Rose explained that she was looking for abstractions, images that make the viewer wonder; those full of lines, shapes and rhythms, that often only hint at their subject in the chosen titles.
Rose admitted that such competitions were difficult to judge, but at the same time welcomed our approaches in both colour and the less familiar monochrome, and was very generous in her appreciation, feedback and recommendations for improvement.
In the Colour section members explored a wide range of subject matter that included echoes of Christmas, shadows of runners, sunrises and street scenes. Diana Walker was Commended for “Autumn Leaves” and Janice Cuer for “The Tomb”, whilst Pamela Bruce Lockhart’s “Looking out to Sea, and Jane Richardson’s “Into the Void” were both Highly Commended. Rose awarded 3rd place to Jenny Short with the amazing shapes of “Low Flying” gulls over the moat in Wells, and 2nd place to David Bathard for the colour and vibrant luminosity of “Flower Power”. The winner of this section (to her surprise and delight) was Jill Toman with “Misty Woodland”.
The entries in the Mono section tended to be more mysterious and atmospheric with Suzanne Ladds “Street Scene” and Jenny Short’s very textural “Bouquet” deservedly Commended. Bill Collett’s “Angel”, taken in the rain at Sculptures by the Lakes last summer, and Jane Richardson’s intriguing “Hideaway” were both Highly Commended. Unable to choose between the three, Rose awarded joint 1st place to Tony Nineham’s “Sunlight through the Branches”, Jenny Short’s “Feeding Frenzy” and Pamela Bruce Lockhart’s “Henri Cartier Bresson-like” street scene entitled “On the Run”.
All the images will appear on our website for those interested and we are pleased to say that Rose has agreed to return again next season as a judge of perhaps more traditional fare.
Jane Richardson and John Scaife will provide a joint presentation to members on 3rd April.
