NRPS members this week thoroughly enjoyed a wonderful presentation from the highly professional, Yeovil based, fashion photographer, Laura Pearce. She has a modern, contemporary, highly recognisable style, which is all her own, born of a conviction that her craft is simply based upon a good understanding and use of the combinations of light, whether natural or studio, that is cast upon a chosen subject.

Not the usual Camera Club fare, Laura’s talk was packed with tips and illustrated by high quality stills and videos of her own making. A master of the “Military Operation” Laura uses mood boards and models to very best effect in locations as diverse as her home studio, Dorset’s Blue Pool and Poundbury, and the seedier carparks, back streets and canal sides she seeks out on online street maps.

Laura works with models and videographers to great effect, offering them opportunities to develop their craft as well as their portfolios alongside her own, but always giving them the credit they deserve as they learn. Equally as effective was her more recent “candid, organic” approach in her attempts to make the most of styles, textures, colour and juxtaposition. She clearly illustrated how to place subjects and props, how to make the most of the light and the weather through this more photojournalistic, narrative or editorial style.

Tips on the use of props for security and wigs for variation abounded, as well as advice on how to get the best out of male models and how to create compelling moods, stories, colour and balance that fires the imagination and suits the commercial or personal brief.

This was an evening that had something for the photographic bent in each of us, and Laura was warmly thanked for being there and for the excellent presentation provided. I personally look forward to a return visit by Laura, even as a judge !!
